Friday sigh
I just called the Mister at work and said, "it's sad when a woman has to drink by herself." It's about 5:30 on this Friday evening and it's time for him to come home. He works many long hours.
There is something about Friday night that is unlike any other. Even on Saturday, the bittersweet breath of Sunday, which comes before Monday, can be felt on the back of my neck. But on Friday, it can all be done tomorrow, or later, or never. The weekend of time stretches out to infinity, on Friday night.
And this is an especially nice Friday night as we have nowhere to go, nothing to do, and no reason to get up in the morning. Bliss. I am making a beef stew, cutting up the vegetables between reading blogs and adding them at the appropriate time so they don't over cook. The house smells like garlic and chicken stock. Three cats are sleeping nearby, alert for any sign of activity that indicates that food might be imminent. The last light of this cool October night is reflecting off the lake and into the house.
Ah, the garage door is opening. Time to open the wine.
I wish you all newspapers and the hot drink of your choice in bed tomorrow morning.

ah....Fridays. Meno you took the words right out of my wine smelling-mouth. Have a good one everybody.
It's beef stew weather here too. I'll have to take a rain check on the sleeping in - for about 5 years.
I wish I had your Friday night. My "other" job is tomorrow and somehow I have to make day of the dead decorations before Sunday morning...but I want to drink some gin and tonics tonight.
ahhh. i want to be over at your place, eating stew. sounds absolutely perfect.
Me too. Stew and wine beats what I've got here tonight.
hi caro. let's lift one together.
de, that time will come again, and you will appreciate it like never before.
susbob, don't forget the ass gaskets ghosts. Enjoy the G&T
jen, you are invited. And i really wish you were here. It smells amazing. I used lots of rosemary from the yard.
lucia. come on over honey.
Meno, I know what you mean about the Friday night feeling. Though I think I feel it Saturday morning more. I'm just so exhausted by Friday night. But this morning did bring a delectable cup of hot cocoa. Enjoy your weekend.
What a lovely description of home...wish I could feel that way!!
I had to work this morning, Saturday. Which meant my usually sacred Friday night was a work night. I can't tell you how robbed I feel.
Although, it's 4 pm and I'm drinking beer, reading blogs. Maybe it will get better. ;-)
maggie, mmm, hot chocolate. Nice. My child is older, i think that's one of the reasons that i no longer feel like i've been beaten on Friday nights.
josephine, i wish you could too. And i hope you will someday. You have a lovely new home that you can work on it in.
jennifer, Work on a Saturday. That's sad! But it does sound like your day is picking up.
Sundays are the worse, though aren't they? And feeling the breath of it down your neck, perfect imagery.
Evenings like the ones you described, that is what it's all about, huh? That's why we have all the other days, to earn one like that.
It's funny how I still feel those same things you mention on Fri. night and on Sun. night even though I'm not working! (My husband still works so maybe it's empathy and the fact that his patterns are enteined with mine.)
MOI, that's entirely true. I have been retired since 6/2005. The weekend v. week feeling still persists, although not with the same intensity. I remember only too well what Sunday felt like. Aech. Aech.. yuck! :)
May all have more Friday nights ~ every evening of the week...

Beef stew sounds like the perfect Fall meal. I found myself racing home from a post-work cocktail yesterday to make chicken wings, salad, and and app for friends coming over for dinner. More like work than relaxation.
We played a lot of pinball afterwards though, so it seemed more weekend-like.
I'm making beef stew right now. Unfortunately, I added the yams too soon and they are soft already. I'm still getting the hang of this.
friday nights are special for me cos my guy comes back from a long place away every friday night, which means i get to see him saturday :)
I can't believe I didn't read this in time for stew. Instead my mom and I braved the rainy weather here in order to feast on yummy Italian food and a cabernet. Nice, but not nearly as good as the kind of stew that comes from someone who is conscientious enough to time the entry of each individual vegetable. Clever.
This was an especially good Friday night because I knew that this weekend we get that hour back, that precious hour.
esereth, there is a certain lowness of energy and spirit associated with Sundays. My family is precious beyond all things to me, so that kind of evening IS what it's all about.
MOI, I no longer work either, but Em has school and the Mister still works, and i have regular things to do during the week, so i still feel that rhythm.
Thailand Gal, Friday nights all around i say!
kerewin, it was really yummy, and will be even better tonight, now that the flavors have had time to "marry." I love pinball, but am not very good at it.
bo, i never thought of using yams. That sounds good.
pei wei, that's quite sweet. Hope your Saturday was great.
liv, Itailian Food doesn't sound too bad either. Mmmm, eggplant parmesian. I learned not to add the potatoes or the green beans too early or they dissolve into the ether and make the whole thing mushy.
marian. Of course it's illogical of me, but sometimes i wish we could get that extra hour every weekend. This one day of the year is especially long and lazy.
Now that I'm working 7 days a week, there is no Friday. But I remember that day and I pine for it.
I always especially enjoy Fridays as well.
