Inert

An object at rest tends to remain at rest.

I am suffering from an advanced case of inertia these days. I can’t seem to make myself move. I am doing the bare minimum around the house. Shopping? I won’t have to if i make pistachio and mustard quesadillas for dinner. Mustard is a vegetable, right? Laundry? I can do it later, these pants aren’t really dirty. If i don’t mail this letter today i can leave 5 minutes later to go get Em. The letter can wait until later.

Later being some undefined time whose only important characteristic is that it is not now. Later really meaning never.

There is lots of heavy sighing too.

The problem is that since i don’t work, there’s always plenty of later. Self-discipline has never been my strong suit.

Time to head off to the gym. If i don’t pack clothes and come home to shower i can sit here for 5 minutes longer.

And the worst thing? I am a whiny ass bitch.

I had a case of the laters yesterday in which I had the car for my one day of the week and did not make it out till much 'later' in the day, as in 4:30, and tried to go do my banking but the banks here close at, what???? 4 p.m.! Ugh. Later can really take over the day can't it? It just walks right in your door, puts its feet up on your coffee table and demands to be fed...

I'm with ya. Did you know that Monday was blue monday? The most depressed day of the year?

Hey, I don't think that's the worst thing. Except when it's me.

But guess what? I FINALLY cleaned out my (huge) bathroom closet this week, pretending it had been flooded! I had to add the flood part or else I wouldn't have thrown anything away.

I say go with it. Go With It. Sit on your ass.

I mean, whose life is it? Who says you've got to go do those things?

Just my .02

Oye. Me too. Febreze is my new best friend.

I agree with Jen. Sit on your ass. If that is how you feel, it is probably because your body is trying to tell you something. You're tired.

Relax. The Calvinists have faded into obscurity. :)

Peace,

I am just like that too. If I was lucky enough to retire I think I'd probably spend all day sleeping or watching TV in my pyjamas and never go out unless I had to get food. Although there's always delivery....

Anyway, the weather sucks and it's hard to get motivated so don't be too hard on yourself. :)

I was just talking about this to a friend who has been retired for awhile. She said she got more done when she was working full time! But when you're retired you always think there's plenty of time and usually don't get back to what you wanted to do for that very reason.

I only do the stuff that's really urgent...then, I figure the world's not going to fall apart if I don't do the other things....and it doesn't!

maggie, i am deep into my later as i write. The kitchen can wait! Those dishes will still be dirty in an hour, or two.

bo, i heard about that on the radio. I believe it too, it's so dark and cold.

de, hurrah for you on the closet! I am mightily impressed with you. You did something.

jen, i do alot of ass sitting, but after a while it depresses me, which makes me want to sit.

v, that stuff is great. "While Febreze and other products based on cyclodextrin reduce odors successfully, they are not replacements for actual cleaning or fresh air, despite popular belief." Damn! (I copied that from Wikipedia.)

chani, my ass is saying "i want to expand." Don't miss those Calvinists either.

platypus, my husband thinks i'm having an affair with the pizza delivery guy. :)

MOI, you are right, nothing has fallen apart yet. Think i'll ignore it all for a few more days.

Aren't you retired?

"pistachio and mustard quesadillas". I Like your culinary justification. At my house it would probably be pistachio, beef jerky and capers quesadillas. I can prolong grocery shopping for a month and live on coffee and cashews....but Mr Hombre caves the moment we run out of creamer.

I've got the blue blahs (hehe, I almost typed Blue Balls). But then again, I spend half the time being blah and half the time a whirling gigglingh dervish and another 10% being normal.

Yes I know that adds up to 110%, but that's what I give life..

Anonymous said...

It's a phase. Enjoy it! (Sooner or later somebody or something comes along and gives a deadline for something, so why not bask in the delightfulness of "later"... while it lasts.

I was like that all weekend -bare minimum everything. Food finally drove me out of the house and some Dazz Band finally helped me clean.

Think about it.

lisa, tired and retired were sitting on a fence....

egan, later.

patches, and that's why we still have food in the house, because the Mister likes to go grocery shopping and who am i to stop him?

ttq, it's not easy being bi. Aren't you on vactaion?

ortizzle, very well, i'll pull a Scarlett and worry about it later.

qt, it's hard to sit still with some good music on. Think i'll try it.

Oh, HONEY! Welcome to my annual case of mid-winter ennui! I'm TOTALLY with you, here! I don't pack clothes to go to the gym, telling myself that I prefer my home shower, anyway. Yeah, I'll just keep telling myself that - maybe, someday, I'll believe me.

Sigh..

it's that time of the year (decade?). i usually just tell people they can come visit so it shames me into tidying up and getting food (and also cussing about having to do it under my breath).

We all have our moments LOL.

So you are a WAB? :)
I have to say later cos I got only 24 hours in my day. I hope to get to your state someday. ;)

meno said...

mrs.chili, it's nice to know i'm not the only one.

kelly, It's amazing how little we can accomplish in one day.

u-u, that's one idea, why don't you come over and visit me?

suebob, this moment has lasted about two weeks, so far.

sanjay, i have a WAB membership card and everything. There is a secret handshake too.

Mona Buonanotte said...

I wanna join the WAB! I have credentials and letters of recommendation, and can whine on cue!

Susanne said...

Well, in my case I don't blame the season, since I'm perfectly capable of sitting on my ass whining all the time in spring and summer too.

And I have to say that I never regret it when I get up and accomplish something.

You know what? The sitting around and doing nothing feels much better when it happens after you have done your chores. Trust me.

(No folks, I am not chanelling your mothers, I am a mother.)

And don't think that I'm immune, I actually spent two days unshowered this week because of the "laters". Yuck.

hmm bi-polar, bi-curious (well one drunken night in my 20's)..and I leave for vaca tomorrow, hope fully with internet at my hands, but if not I got a stack of books from the library.

meno said...

Mona, I hereby induct you as a full fledged member of WAB. The secret handshake involes the use of one finger. I'll bet you can figure it out.

suzanne, what you say is true. I do force myself to do stuff, but i don't like it.

ttq, have fun! Don't think of us.

Oh my gosh, mustard and pistachio quesadillas -- that might be the funniest thing I've ever heard. Some of the dinners I come up with are pretty questionable; I might have to try that one. I'm a stay at home mom with kids who are never home (and can drive themselves) and I also have a severe inertia problem. My dog is my best friend and I like to stay home with him.

we have so many things in common. some days it's all I can do to get out of my chair, leaving my book or movie behind. I feel guilty because I stay home and should be doing the keeping of the house, but it doesn't get done like it should, as my chair has this weird way of drawing me in...
