Just for today, it's a quilting blog

LOOKIT WHAT I MADE!!

It's my first quilt.

Just the binding at the edges to add. Wheeeeeee!

Here's one of the squares, a cat face. We like cats around here.

And one of Em's favorite book series growing up:

And it's less than a year behind schedule. Better than many a government project.

I think i'm cool, can you tell?

There is a simple yet real pleasure in making something with my own two hands. It would have been much easier and faster to buy a quilt, but there would be no feeling of accomplishment. Plus the pleasure of making something for someone i love, and who will appreciate it, hopefully for a long time.

Thanks for letting me brag.

WOW! Oh you're good, now I'm speechless.
Man, this makes me wanna take up sewing. Shit I can't believe I just said that. It's all your fault Meno.

PS: So your beloved SIL is called Mara? (just to rub it in, ehehehe, evil laugh)

Joan said...

Wowee...I am so impressed. I humbly bow to the Queen of Textile Talents.

flutter, fucking cute is a high compliment!

mother hen, this is for my daughter, that's her name. It's someone else's SIL who is a total putz.

now, that's a really cool quilt! and you're pretty cool to make it.

my mom was a quilter and i always wanted to be. still want to be. unfortunately, i lack the motivation and hand coordination.

i look forward to seeing pictures of the next one! ;-)

WOW!

Really - and I'm not being sarcastic or caustic AT ALL - I stand in awe of people who can do this sort of thing. I am creative with words, certainly, but I can't make anything tangible that pleases me. Sure, I can cook, but I can't decorate a cake. My efforts at origami always frustrate me, and I can barely sew a button back on a shirt properly. Those of you who quilt and scrapbook and paint earn my respect and admiration - you bring beauty into the world that I cannot bring.

Table runner to that? With no stops in between? Gifted you are, young needleworker!
Am standing here applauding and wondering if I will be seeing you on the next season of Project Runway (now that the lawsuits are finally over)!

It includes cat hair, right? Awesome! Love knows no deadlines.

That is divine. Well done.

Brag away - I am impressed! What a great present too - if it were for me I would treasure it for the time you put into making it. Plus it's really cute too.

joan, Hmmm, i think maybe a duchess, or viscountess. Queen would be exaggerating. :)

robin, i joined a quilting group. That's my motivation. I wouldn't do it on my own. Too lazy.

mrs. chili, thank you. I don't scrapbook or paint. Painting takes talent and scrapbooking is silly (in my opinion.)

daisy, really? Another season? I can't wait. And thank you. :)

de, i totally agree!

cagey, i can't help myself.

gina, thank you! I think so too.

etk, i had fun with that square too. We are a cat crazy family.

my sil, :D Includes much cat hair, everything around here does, including the food.

furious, expect another quilting post in two or three years.

magpie, thank you!

fiwa, next i think i'll make one for me and The Mister. It was fun.

that's fantastic. When Laura and I married, her church made us a quilt, and Laura's friends and sisters provided embroidered squares. It is much used (so much, it is wearing through an edge) and much treasured (and as such now put away). I'm sure Em will treasure hers always.

I enjoyed browsing here, your quilt and your book review not.

Lynnea said...

brag all you want, that's gorgeous! did you have it quilted by someone else? or do you have the stippling ninja skills? I am impressed either way, I bow to your quilting prowess.

Mrs4444 said...

Holy COW, Meno! You know how to start it out right!! GORGEOUS!

meno said...

jen, i couldn't have done it without your help! :)

bob, i used to have some old quilts too, i loved them to death eventually.

colleen, glad you had fun.

maggie, i only have a really tiny machine, so i had someone else, with a long arm quilting machine, do the actual quilting.

mrs. 4444, i amazed even myself with this one.

Susanne said...

Wow. (I know, it's sad that it takes some sewing to get me out for commenting these days. I'm reading, I really am. Ahem.)

The quilt is fabulous. Especially the embroidery and the colors. I bow to your sewing prowess.

tt said...

I totally bow to your superior sewing skillz!! Did you quilt it by hand or machine?? Either way...beautifully done.
Gotta go, The shade of green I'm turning isn't working with my outfit.

peevish said...

Go, Martha!

You should carry it in your car, just so you can show it off to everyone, quite casually. Like, "Oh, this old thing? I just keep in the back seat to clean the mud off of my shoes." Thereby causing your friends to drop and worship at your altar.

meno said...

suzanne, i know you have a busy life, as do we all. Given that you know how to sew and stuff, your compliments mean a lot to me.

tt, i did all the piecing and made the back, then i paid someone else, who has a long-armed machine, to do the quilting.

peevish, i've thought of that. :) But it's going off to college next year, so i can only do that for a while.

Brad said...

Wow! - Look at you go! - That's awesome. I'd love to try my hand at it but I'm sure it would end up being one of those started projct in the closet - way to go!

This is beautiful! I love the subtle color combinations and everything about it. LOVE it!!!

May Em enjoy this family heirloom in good health!

Lynn said...

That is one beautiful quilt! You are one very talented woman. As to the idea that it is one year overdue...well you just can't hurry art!

TTQ said...

Outstanding. My quilting turned out like my knitting and crocheing (see I can't even spell it right).

I finally put the machine back in the case, also the industreal one. defeated again.

sorry about the misspelling on this my blood toxins are out of whack again.....

luckyzmom said...

Really fabulous. I'm so impressed. And to be finally finished is it's own special feeling....

caro said...

A work of art. Was it as much fun to make as it is beautiful?

Cheesy said...

Maggie beat me to the stipple question. I was gonna load up my machine to come get lessons! I am struggling to teach myself...sigh~

Very sweet wrap m'dear!

Dick said...

That looks good. Is it for Em?

Dianne said...

I'm so jealous! I love things that are made by hand but my hands just won't listen to me. I am all thumbs - well maybe all thumbs and 1 middle finger for communicating

Mia says thanks - she loves the cat face :)

sari said...

Meno, I love it! Great work!

This is fantastic. I love the cat face.

Holy cow, Meno! That's awesome. I've been wanting to make a quilt out of some old t-shirts I have that I just can't bring myself to throw away. You are good inspiration.... :-)

lu said...

You are supa cool! So is your quilt.

meno said...

brad, if i didn't belong to a group that kept me going on it, it would be sitting in the closet with your projects.

hearts, thank you. It was a lot of fun to make.

lynn, good point! I'll use that line myself.

ttq, speling iz overrated!

luckyzmom, thank you. I am totally full of myself right now.

caro, you know, it WAS fun. But a lot of the fun came from being with the other ladies whilst working on it.

cheesy, what's a stipple? Guess i have more to learn. :)

dick, it is indeed. To cheer up her dorm room.

dianne, notice that all the lines are straight lines, no tricky sewing involved! Hi Mia.

sari, thank you. :)

princess, t-shirt quilts are COOL. Do it! Maybe join a group to keep you focused.

lu, thanks sweetie. :)

Stippling is the free-style stitching they used to connect the layers....
